When Opera Meets Autism

A pilot program on the City University of New York's five campuses provides rare support, through group sessions and workshops, to students who are both on the autism spectrum and low-income.

In Seattle, the over-policing of drug users has been extensive and frequently racially biased. Looking for a new solution, the LEAD (Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion) program, driven by a harm reduction philosophy, is connecting users with key social services rather than punishment.

Layette is replatforming itself to embrace local culture over a dangerous oil dependency. CREATE, a voter-approved initiative in the city, funds cultural events and festivals to create new economic drivers and to promote the cultural legacy of the region. The fund draws upon money designated from a larger pool of surplus property tax revenue, as well as from philanthropic donations.

Lip-reading is very important for clarification for those who are deaf and hard-of-hearing, but the masks mandated by the coronavirus pandemic hinder that. In response, the nonprofit Catalyst Life Services (which currently serves about 90 deaf and hard-of-hearing people in Richland County) created masks that feature a "window" over the mouth made of clear plastic so that the wearer stays protected and interpretable. Not only have these services benefited people, and connected them with others in the community, but they’ve also led to decreased criminal activity like theft.

Several of these businesses have practices in place like offering noise-canceling headphones, access to quiet rooms or even hosting autism awareness weekends, helping to make the city the first Autism Certified City in the world.
