Turning soldiers into scholars by turning military experience into college credit

Huge numbers of students lack the chance to go to college because of financial problems. Recently, Kalamazoo schools received more funding allowing them to have the chance to help and pay for students to then go to college and receive a higher education.

Flip the Script is a program utilized on college campuses that trains women to prevent sexual assault. The program educates young women on setting their own personal boundaries, recognizing the early signs of a sexual assault, and training them to respond effectively to a dangerous situation. The program encompasses physical and verbal training and has proven so effective that Evidence-Based Programs rated it as the only program in violence prevention to date that earns a Top Tier score.

Georgia State University's predictive analytics system has helped students graduate by flagging at-risk students using a variety of factors, including college and high school grades, financial aid statuses, and more. While other universities attempt to scale the program to increase retention at their universities as well, serious concerns about privacy and surveillance persist, as do hesitations regarding the cost of expanding advisory services as Georgia State has done.

In several small rural towns in Texas, mental health professionals from Texas Tech are offering telemedicine counseling to make up for a lack of counselors available in local middle and high schools. The Governor's office has now asked the successful school districts to develop a training program for teachers in other Texas districts in order to scale the model.

Changing the culture in university Greek Life requires proactive collaboration between students and university staff. The University of Oregon’s Sexual Violence Prevention Leadership Board (SVPLB) is composed of representatives of each of the University’s Greek Life groups and managed with the assistance of a faculty liaison. In weekly meetings, members of the group discuss sexual violence prevention, consent, and setting boundaries. The faculty liaison, meanwhile, provides support and institutional memory for the group as students graduate.

As colleges and universities across the United States have shifted to online classes and shut down their campuses, not every student simply has the ability to move home. To help support these students, many of whom are low-income or international, the Stay Together Appalachian Youth Project began working with local communities to find housing for displaced students, as well as to provide other support like money or supplies.

The Romani Education Fund in Slovakia is helping children from the Roma community, which has a history of social and economic disadvantages as well as being subject to ethnic discrimination, overcome challenges to finish high school and pursue higher education. The science and technology gap in Haiti is being bridged through the establishment of the Haitian Bioscience Initiative, which is a full science lab. The program has successfully trained students that have gone on to find gainful employment in the field. “The more people trained in basic science sills, the better it will be for the country.”

Income share agreements provide students a new way to pay for college. They receive the money they need by agreeing to give the school a percentage of their future earnings for a set number of years after graduation.
