If Everybody Hates Wasting Food, Why Do We Do It (And How Can We Stop)?

Chilis on Wheels New York, is part of a coalition of mostly vegan and Black, Indigenous, and Latinx-founded and led organizations that partner with the Office of Food and Nutritional Services to expand plant-based offerings in the city’s schools. The group works to implement practices like “Vegan Fridays,” where the school meal of the day is plant-based, a practice that is picking up speed across the U.S.

Many young TikTok users are sharing videos about environmental issues, like climate change and biodiversity, and it is leading to resource sharing, personal connections, and people reaching out to learn more about environmental topics like gardening, soil restoration, renewable energy, and environmental racism. Some believe the Covid-19 lockdown has increased engagement even further. A subculture called “grass TikTok” emerged to share information about plant species and has nearly 380 million views. The potential ban of TikTok in the US could lead to declining biodiversity engagement online.

Coastal Shellfish, an Indigenous aquaculture company in British Columbia, is focusing on sustainable food and food security through its product Great Bear Scallops. This is the first project funded by the Costal Funds trust set up by donors, governments, and First Nations to support sustainable Indigenous-led businesses. The company has been selling scallops to several local businesses like restaurants and breweries.

The Ajo Center for Sustainable Agriculture has helped the town of Ajo in Arizona distribute affordable and nutrient-dense food to the community after the coronavirus pandemic created a significant financial strain on many families. Additional support has come from the town's participation in the Environmental Protection Agency's program Local Food, Local Places which "provides technical support and expertise to help towns leverage food systems to boost economic development."

En Belgique, des éco-chèques sont distribués aux salariés pour les inciter à consommer des produits plus écologiques. Bien qu'inégalitaire, ce dispositif permet de réduire les émissions de CO2, permet aux salariés de faire des économies et d'inciter à une consommation plus responsable. En 2017 et 2018 leur utilisation a respectivement permis une économie estimée entre 216 665 tonnes de CO2 et 229 797 tonnes de CO2, soit environ 0,23 % des émissions totales annuelles de la Belgique.

At the Fujitsu factory in Japan, a significant decline in demand for semiconductor computer chips meant the company had large empty factory space sitting unused. A new business approach allowed them to dually address both the need to evolve their business model with a global decline of viable agricultural space needed to grow the world's food. Now, the factory houses indoor vegetable gardens, soil free and less resource-heavy than traditional farmland.

Aus menschlichen Ausscheidungen lässt sich viel mehr machen als bisher. Zum Beispiel Dünger. Die Böden könnten so Nährstoffe zurückerhalten, die ihnen zuvor entnommen werden. Verschiedene Akteure arbeiten bereits daran.

Desde el 2013, un proyecto que involucra científicos y comunidad, ha trabajado para limpiar de una contaminación masiva el verde del Lago Ypacaraí y educar a la población aledaña sobre el cuido del recurso hídrico. Los resultados han ido más allá de la eliminación de algas y bacterias en el lago, han permitido la organización en por ejemplo la Comisión Nacional de Gestión y Manejo del Lago Ypacaraí y su Cuenca (Conalaypa). Pero aún falta mayor educación en la población e inversión pública que permita eliminar las malas prácticas en el manejo de las aguas negras.

El proyecto Una Lata de Agua es una inciativa que busca instalar en las comunidades de Caracas, Venezuela, sistemas de recolección de agua que permitan abastecer a las familias de agua potable, porque en el norte del país la escases del agua es crítica. Con el proyecto instalado en Barrio Nuevo se benefician más de 1600 familias.

During the pandemic, indigenous communities received massive federal funding through the 2020 Coronavirus Aid, the 2021 American Rescue Plan Act, and the Relief and Economic Security Act for a number of needs, like infrastructure and tribal housing improvements. Many indigenous entities received smaller funds too. But COVID exacerbated several long-pending and neglected issues, local officials and tribal members say, and the funding does not sufficiently address them in the longterm.
