Adopt-a-Lot Program Converts Newark's Vacant Lots into Gardens

A grass blend formulated specifically for northern Utah’s environment uses at least 30 percent less water than typical turf.

A public-private scheme between the Seychelles Islands Foundation and a government agency is allowing residents to plant seeds of the coco de mer, or sea coconut, as a way to save the endangered tree species. So far, 96 seeds have been planted on 26 properties. Despite its extremely slow growth rate, island residents are excited to grow trees for future generations and protect them from poachers.

A startup in California called Crop Swap LA is converting unused front yards into community gardens that can grow crops like kale, rainbow chard, and tomatoes as a way to feed neighbors. Community members can pay for subscriptions for up to $43 a month to receive a bundle of greens and vegetables from the microfarms and homeowners get a share of the profits. Each garden needs to have the proper maintenance, which can make it difficult to scale, but these gardens can help provide access to food to those who don’t have a grocery store in their area.

The Yurok Tribe, located in Northern California, depends on fishing to sustain a living. However, a severe drought, the COVID-19 pandemic, and a crumbling highway severely affected the tribe. So, leaders are turning towards new ways of making an income: a community garden.

In order to attract and sustain pollinators, communities in Ohio and Wisconsin are resorting to a more "unkempt" approach. In Mansfield, Ohio the community started planting "butterfly and pollinator gardens" in various areas of the city, as well introduced new mowing patterns which include mowing less areas and letting some areas overgrow. In Appleton, Wisconsin, the city council has instituted "No Mow May" during which "communities suspend the enforcement of their long-grass rules for the month, allowing property owners to delay lawn care as a way to promote pollinator-friendly habitats."

Could clean meat be the solution for cutting greenhouse gas emissions, feeding an ever-growing human population and saving water? A growing number of food innovators think so, as do investors such as Bill Gates and Richard Branson. Although too expensive to hit the market immediately, production is in the works to create clean meat from animal cells that may be better for human health and the health of the environment.

In Kenya, like other countries in the world, deforestation is the major driver of tree cover loss. To solve this, a local startup called Seedball Kenya has developed the seedball technology whereby seeds of indigenous tree and grass species are coated with charcoal waste mixed with nutritious binders then thrown like balls into the planting grounds.

As a part of its journey to 100% clean energy, California is banning the sale of gas-powered landscaping equipment in 2024. The ban has done little to transition landscapers to electric tools. They cite the need for clients to understand that the tools might not leave a yard immaculate, better battery-powered options, and funding assistance as more helpful steps for the transition to electric.

In 2020, Nigeria's Centre for Community Empowerment and Poverty Eradication (CCEPE) and Small Scale Women Farmers Organisation of Nigeria (SWOFON) began to train women farmers on the use of dung and plant wastes as organic fertiliser and pesticides; to date, CCEPE has trained 40 women farmers in Asa and 20 women farmers in Kaima, resulting in more bountiful harvests and economic savings.
