The birds thrive off of the wetlands environment and up to 10,000 storks breed and lay eggs there each season. The farmers-turned-researchers are known as “Bhujal Jaankars” and they monitor rainfall, dam water levels, and water quality to notify residents so they can plant crops that don’t require a lot of water. While there is a lack of gender diversity in the group, they are working on developing training to include more functional literacy skills to encourage participation from others.

The island of Majuli has been plagued by an infestation of white grub beetles for a long time, but starting in 2012 as many as 400 farmers have been trained to capture the beetle when they emerge out of the ground for mating season. Since 2010, 900,000 beetles have been collected and are now ending up on residents' plates. This strategy has since won several awards for its innovation and sustainability.
