    Food companies like General Mills and Hershey are sharing their expertise with entrepreneurs in Africa to help strengthen their businesses and depend less on foreign imports. Employees of the company volunteer through an organization called Partners in Food Solutions, and they share advice about things like hygiene, business plans, vitamin enrichment, and more. So far over 250 African businesses have worked with more than 1,400 Partners in Food Solutions employees.

    In the Navajo Nation, a territory the size of West Virginia that spans counties in New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah, people live in extreme poverty and lack access to clean water or electricity. A group called DigDeep is now serving the Navajo residents with large water storage systems and solar-powered pumps to bring water directly into the home rather than traveling miles away to carry water home. DigDeep is equipping nearly 300 homes in the area and has since received funding from Rotary International to expand their work further.

    An organization called Books for Africa collects donations of books from all over the country to send to schools in Rwanda. Books for Africa has sent over 41 million books over the past 30 years to 53 different countries. Students at one of the schools receiving the books in Rwanda say they enjoy reading because it helps them improve their vocabulary and learn about American culture, but they also wish they could receive more books about Africa.

  • In India, this group helps turn wasteland into greener pastures

    An organization funded by the government called Foundation for Ecological Security is leading the charge to reforest wastelands in India to alleviate some of the struggles that rural areas undergo. This creates holding ponds, replenishes soil, and even prompts the community to work together to equitably distribute any leftover water amongst the farmers. It also helps stem the tide of urbanization and addresses the concern that the country may soon run out of food. The group has worked in 13,000 villages across India, reaching about 8 million people, and they still have millions of acres of land to reforest.
