    HAWK, or Hostile Activity Watch Kernel, is a digital intelligence gathering system for wildlife crime in India. Field staff use HAWK’s app to enter data when they encounter a crime, which generates the documents an officer needs to submit in court. Since HAWK’s 2020 rollout, the criminal investigation process has been streamlined, resulting in fewer errors, quicker processing times, and more transparency. Building off its success, HAWK is now being introduced to more Indian states.

  • Indian Cities Prepare for Floods with Predictive Technology

    In coastal cities in India, floods have led to hundreds of deaths and millions of people being displaced. To address the issue, scientists had to address a variety of factors: hydrology of the upstream region; river, tidal, and storm surge modeling; and a high-resolution digital elevation map of the city. A group of scientists from 13 research institutes and government organizations looked at all those factors and came up with a real-time flood forecasting system. It generated 800 flood scenarios. When it rains the model predicts the most vulnerable sites.

    A social entrepreneur in India is taking plastic waste and using it to make housing structures. Prashanth Lingam takes the waste and turns it into roofing sheets, tiles, and other objects. For example, he built a house for parking staff at a local metro station and 5 million plastic bags were used just on the roof. The cost of these structures are higher than regular houses, but repurposing plastic into other objects could be a potential sustainability solution for the country.

  • A Toll-free Number Helps Villagers Live With Animals

    By calling a toll-free number, villagers in India can receive help for filing claims after human-animal conflicts like an elephant stomping on their crops or a tiger killing cattle. The service, known as Wild Seve, operates in 284 villages where a field agent arrives to take photos of the damage and file documentation to the government so residents can receive compensation. Field agents have helped file claims for more than 3,000 incidents. The hope is that residents can receive compensation for their losses quickly and, hopefully, are less likely to harm the animals.
