    Shoreline Medical is a non-profit primary care network on the Saanich Peninsula that has expanded residents’ access to primary care doctors. The group has successfully attracted family care doctors despite a severe shortage through combining community and hospital-based care. Doctors spend five weeks working in family medicine and one week assisting with low-severity cases in the emergency room. The physician staffing growth has allowed Shoreline to increase their patient case load to over 17,000 residents, 11,000 of whom previously lacked a primary care doctor.

    A team of sign language interpreters across Nigeria translated into indigenous Nigerian sign language, the internationally acclaimed book “My Hero is You” which helps children, their parents and caregivers understand and answer questions about the coronavirus. With the signing of this book into an indigenous Nigerian sign language, deaf signers can now reach out to their communities. They teach them in the sign language they understand, using local words to explain how the virus came to be and how to prevent its spread and protect their communities.

    Funded by the Hear the World Foundation, Écoute-moi! provides audiological care in Chad. Working closely with children at a school for hearing loss, the group conducts audiograms to assess hearing loss levels, fits the children with hearing aids, and supports them afterwards with things like speech therapy. In order to create a sustainable model of care, the nonprofit has also trained four local audiological care technicians, the first in the country to provide services. Speech therapy is an important part of the follow-up support to help children speak after not hearing for years.

    Lip-reading is very important for clarification for those who are deaf and hard-of-hearing, but the masks mandated by the coronavirus pandemic hinder that. In response, the nonprofit Catalyst Life Services (which currently serves about 90 deaf and hard-of-hearing people in Richland County) created masks that feature a "window" over the mouth made of clear plastic so that the wearer stays protected and interpretable. So far the nonprofit has made 20 for their community and another 100 for local first responders, but they are looking for more donations and help going forward.
